ILLUSTRATIONS

The Stromillo’s Encyclopedia of Biological Medicine is full of illustrations, thousands of color photos and drawings; there’s hardly any page without illustrations and black and white was used only in historical photos or when colors were not available. A lot of space has been allotted to broadsheet pages on anatomy and histology, to bacteriological specimens as well as toothier topics of special visual interest. Generally, the illustrations refer to lemmas hosted on the same page or on the one immediately preceding or following. The numerous and comprehensive captions follow the order of the tables from left to right and from top to bottom even when they are not numbered(the exceptions are clearly marked). The headers are on the top to the right and left of the page, respectively odd and even, they reproduce the first and the last headword of the pair pages. Thus it facilitates the widest possible entries. The numbering of pages in Arabic numerals is progressive and it is not interrupted by the Roman numbering, independent of the monographic entries of special importance typed out of the text on two instead of three columns. Consequently, the total number of pages of the book is given by the sum of the pages numbered with Arabic and those numbered with Roman numerals. The iconography has been adjusted and updated to the latest data available.

THE MONOGRAPHS. Interspersed with the text there are some entrances of particular interest due to leading authors, to specialized subjects or to important people in the academic and cultural life of their countries. Such monographic entrances are inserted in the immediate vicinity to the headwords to which they relate and they contain an exceptional development for cutting and measuring, providing expanded news and references specialized on the argument in question. There are also entrances of great documentary or scientific value, personal testimonies and unique stories, famous names in medicine, in science, in physics and in biological culture in general.

SCIENTIFIC PART

Most of the entries of the scientific interest, especially those with regards to chemistry, nuclear biophysics, psycho-cybernetics and vibrational medicine, have received a special impulse through special length and specialization; much bigger than the dimension of a normal encyclopedia. Some of them even ended up being small treaties.

This enrichment was desired by the Editor so that the new medical generation would-be able to find in the Stromillo’s  Encyclopedia of Biological Medicine a faithful image, the most up-to-date and detailed, of the scientific world that awaits them and surrounds them and within which they are called to operate.

READING LEVELS. The level of writing (and of reading) of the various entries has the ambition of being truly “universal” without giving up any enrichment, especially in the areas that requires it. Our Encyclopedia can be usefully used at different levels, either as first information for the young people, for scholars or for the curious, or as a successive specialization for the college students or even up to university professors.

This plurality of levels is particularly rich and clear not only in the entries with scientific character, but also in those –many- that summarize broad patterns and trends of schools of thought. They provide maximum information on schools of orthodox medicine or academic debates, critiques and ideologies of today and the past. There was no fear of “contaminating” the encyclopedic dignity with the strong flavor of the latest information in this field but always referring to the great principles of civil coexistence and medical ethics, of democratic freedom and of more broad religious freedom.
